Firearms, Ammunition & Related Items
ClassifiedAds.ca permits listings for lawful non-restricted firearms and certain related items, subject to the rules below and to all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal laws — including the Firearms Act and the Criminal Code. By posting or responding to any firearm-related ad, you agree to these rules.
This is a plain-language summary for convenience only. It is not legal advice and may not reflect the most current law. Firearms laws in Canada change frequently. You are solely responsible for confirming the current rules with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program (CFP) at 1-800-731-4000 or rcmp.ca/en/firearms.
- Valid licence required. You must hold a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) to buy, sell, trade, or give any firearm, ammunition, cartridge magazine, or regulated firearm part (including barrels and slides). Restricted firearms require RPAL privileges. Both buyer and seller must confirm each other's licence before any transfer.
- Handguns are NOT permitted. A national freeze in force since October 21, 2022 and codified by Bill C-21 prohibits individuals from selling, buying, or transferring handguns in Canada. Do not list any handgun for sale, trade, or giveaway.
- Prohibited and 'assault-style' firearms are NOT permitted. Firearms prohibited by law — including the makes and models prohibited by the Orders in Council of May 2020, December 2024, and March 2025 — cannot be transferred to new owners and must not be listed.
- Non-restricted transfers require verification. Before transferring a non-restricted firearm, the seller must verify the buyer holds a valid PAL and obtain a transfer reference number from the CFP. The firearm may change hands only after the reference number is issued.
- Restricted firearms (non-handgun only). Transfers must be processed through the CFP: both parties contact the CFP, the transfer must be approved by the provincial Chief Firearms Officer, the firearm must be registered to the new owner, and lawful transport rules apply.
- Ammunition, magazines & parts. A valid PAL is required to acquire ammunition and firearm parts such as barrels and slides. Magazines must comply with federal capacity limits.
- Air guns, replicas & antiques. Air guns below the regulated velocity/energy thresholds, and genuine pre-1898 antiques that meet the legal definition, may generally be sold without a PAL — but you must confirm the item's exact legal status before listing.
- Absolutely prohibited items. Never list: fully automatic firearms; converted or 'ghost' guns; suppressors/silencers; prohibited devices and magazines; explosives; or any prohibited weapon under the Criminal Code (including switchblades, brass knuckles, and similar items).
- Authentic photos only. You must currently own the item and use your own photos of the actual item. Stock, catalogue, or internet images are not permitted.
- Platform role & enforcement. ClassifiedAds.ca is an advertising platform only. We are not a party to any transaction, do not verify licences or legality, and accept no liability for dealings between users. We may remove any listing, suspend or ban any user, and report suspected illegal activity to law enforcement.
Last reviewed: 2026. Verify current requirements with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program before completing any transfer.
